SEATTLE — It's a homecoming for Tyler and Kim Malek.
"Food has this ability to bring people together," Tyler said.
In 2011, the Seattle area cousins took their love of handcrafted ice cream to the streets of Portland.
"We started just as a pushcart," Tyler said. "We just had so much fun making and serving ice cream."
And people had fun eating it. Their company, Salt & Straw, quickly captured a fervent fan base and expanded to 19 store locations, from Portland to San Diego.
Kim Malek said, "Tyler makes all the ice cream and comes up with all of the ice cream recipes. I always say I got the short end of the stick because I negotiate with landlords and make sure we can make payroll."
Now, the dynamic duo has come home to Seattle with their latest expansion, featuring 12 permanent flavors plus ever-rotating offerings.

"We change our menu every four weeks," Tyler said, "And with that, we're just constantly looking for new stories to tell in the city."
The menu presents five seasonal flavors in mind-blowing combinations.
And you can always grab a pint from their freezer. No matter how you eat it, these cousins say you are cordially invited to their ice cream party.
Kim said, "It's been a really great seven years together."
Tyler added, "I love it. I just make ice cream all day. That's a job!"
Salt & Straw's Seattle locations carry 17 flavors. 12 are permanent:
